Oakland Care goes even Greener for September
This September we’re celebrating our ‘Green Month’ to mark our commitment to sustainability, and the next chapter in our sustainability journey, with the launch of our new strategy.
Going Greener for September
We will be participating in a range of green initiatives across our eight care homes. Between the 12th – 16th of September, residents and team members will be enjoying numerous activities during our ‘Green Week’, an annual occasion that we launched last year. This will include litter picking, beach cleans, tree planting, and the creation of butterfly and bee gardens to improve biodiversity.
Homes will also be hosting guest speakers and events, with speakers from the Essex Forestry Initiative, Epping Forest Heritage Trust and the RSPCA. Elsyng House Care Home in Enfield will also be celebrating their Wildlife Day with the local Mayor in attendance.
As part of our strategy to encourage positive environmental change in social care, we will be going one step further this year, with even more events planned stretching across the whole of September. This includes joining millions around the globe to celebrate Recycling Week between the 19th – 25th of September, with our care homes undertaking their own unique and individual activities to focus on even further improving their established recycling initiatives.
The Greener Care Choice
The launch of the next stage of our green journey comes as we continue to push the boundaries of sustainability in social care. We’re still the UK’s only Carbon Neutral Care Group for the second year running as certified by Carbon Neutral Britain, and we aim to achieve a Level 3 certificate by Green Mark, the highest grade awarded by the sustainability specialists.
We’re also in the process of bolstering our credentials with BREEAM – the world’s leading assessment method for sustainable buildings. Our Elsyng House, Elmbrook Court and Woodland Grove Care Homes are now BREEAM accredited, and we are in the process of gaining accreditation for all care homes in the Oakland Care group.
To mark these pivotal achievements, we are launching our new ‘Greener Care Choice’ branding to raise awareness of our leading strategy on Sustainability in the care sector.
Joanne Balmer BEM, Chief Executive Officer of Oakland Care, said:
“We’re extremely excited to launch the next stage of our sustainability journey this September. Following the success of our previous Green Week, we are eager to go one step further this year to build on the incredible progress we have made on our sustainability journey. This will see everyone across Oakland Care work as one as we look to demonstrate how our sector can be a positive force in the fight against climate change.
“As the UK’s only carbon-neutral care group for the second year in a row, we want to continue encouraging other care home providers to push ahead with their own journey to improve sustainability
Together, our industry can drive real change to alleviate the climate emergency, while empowering our residents and team members to make their mark on this crucial issue.”
