Equipping our Wellbeing Champions
Mental Health Matters
Our Wellbeing Champions at Oakland Care recently completed the MHFA Wellbeing Champion Course, demonstrating our commitment to supporting our team members’ wellbeing and mental health.
Theresa Doody, Wellbeing Champion commented, “I really enjoyed the course. The instructor was fantastic, she had a great sense of humour and made the course really fun and interesting. The trainer was incredibly professional and covered a lot of ground which I think could have potentially been quite heavy had she not used the training techniques that she did. It was a mixture of slides, working in notebooks, group discussions and even some reading out to the group. The day went really quickly which is always a sign that you’re enjoying a course!
I was particularly impressed with the workbook and manual we were given to take home for reference. It meant that we could really concentrate on the training and retain the information and not be too worried about frantically scribbling information down. I felt I could really listen knowing I would have notes to refer to at a later date should I need to. I came away with some really good tips on how to manage my own mental health but more importantly be there for other staff members that need support. The course really was very beneficial”.
MHFA England’s mission is to train one in ten people in mental health awareness and skills to equip people with the skills they need to support their own and others’ wellbeing. They want their training to create an unshakable belief that we can all talk freely about mental health and seek support when it is needed and they aim to achieve this through their mission of raising mental health awareness.
We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health and mental ill health can strike at any time and affect people from all walks of life. Research shows we don’t tend to know how to take care of our mental health like we do our physical health. This means that people may not know how to support a friend, family member or colleague experiencing a mental health issue, or where to go for support with their own mental health.
That’s why at Oakland Care through training our Wellbeing Champions will have:
- An understanding of common mental health issues
- Knowledge and confidence to advocate for mental health awareness
- Ability to spot signs of mental ill health
- Skills to support positive wellbeing
We are proud that our Wellbeing champions underwent their training and have now received their MHFA Wellbeing Champion certification.
