International Nurses Day – Thursday 12th May 2022
Celebrating International Nurses Day
Today, Thursday 12th May is International Nurses Day and we’ll be seeing Nurses from around the world join forces to celebrate the difference they make to residents’ and patients’ lives every single day. The theme of this year’s event is ‘A Voice to Lead – Invest in nursing and respect rights to secure global health.’ To mark the event, a few of our Nurses across our care homes have explained what they enjoy so much about being a Nurse and the satisfaction they get from working at Oakland Care.
“It is of great feeling that I have been part of others’ lives…in providing residents tender loving care”
Laarni Tan graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Liceo de Cagayan University, Philippines. Laarni commented, “It was my mum who motivated me to join the Nurse profession. When I became a licensed Nurse, my mum encouraged me to explore abroad and I chose the UK”.
Laarni was excited to become a Nurse here in the UK, she did her adaptation for Nurses at North Hampton University in January 2004 and received her NMC Pin in June 2004. She then worked at Rushcliffe Care Company in Loughborough for 8 years. In 2012, her family moved to Eastbourne and she worked at BUPA and then joined Oakland Care in April 2018, after working as a Nurse in the UK for 18 years and 5 months.
Laarni said, “I consider Beechwood Grove as my second home”. The staff and residents are my family here at work. What I find most rewarding in being a Nurse is the personal connection that I can make with the residents. Even though they may or may not remember their Nurses’ names, they will remember their Nurses if they are kind and compassionate – and a good Nurse always is.
At work, I enjoy listening to residents’ stories, teaching others, being taught, being provided with opportunities to grow, the ability to learn and strengthen my weaknesses and most importantly to work as a part of a team whilst getting hands-on experience. It is a great feeling that I have been part of others’ lives, providing them tender loving care, in a homely environment and making their lives meaningful and fulfilled”.
