Oakland Care Sustainability Committee Visit Windfarm in East Sussex
On 23rd August, Oakland Care’s Sustainability Committee visited Rampion Offshore Windfarm off the coast of Brighton, East Sussex.
On what was probably the sunniest and calmest day to go out to sea this summer, our Oakland Care Sustainability Committee boarded the Brighton Diver IV as a thank-you for their hard-working efforts over the past couple of years.
The informative tour gave the team an insight into the scales, benefits and operational workings of the UK’s renewable energy options for the future. The group sailed 7.5 miles out to witness the magnitude of the wind farm, spanning the same distance in width. The weather and sea conditions were perfect, allowing the team to get the best out of the day.
There are 116 turbines, each standing 140m high, producing 1,400GWh of power, which supply 350,000 homes. Since the wind farm has been completed, that area of the seabed has now returned to its natural habitat with abundant marine life. The whole site reduces emissions of approximately 600,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Aaron White, Head of Business Services and Sustainability, commented, “This was a valuable team-building event for the Sustainability Committee – a team of Oakland Care employees representing all departments and Care Homes within Oakland Care.
The sustainability committee meet regularly to share ideas and introduce new initiatives to move Oakland Care further forward on its journey to net zero, and this is an example of the continued focus and importance Oakland Care places on sustainability as the ‘Greener Care Choice’”.
