Experiencing what it’s like to live with Dementia at Beechwood Grove Care Home
Staff and relatives of residents at our Beechwood Grove care home recently got an insight into what living with dementia may be like when The Virtual Dementia Tour Bus visited our home recently.
Dementia now kills more people than Heart Disease or Cancer and is the largest cause of death in the UK. Statistics show that one in three people that were born in the UK in 2015 are expected to die from dementia.
This hands-on experience gave carers and family members an opportunity to really understand dementia by walking in the shoes of a person with the disease and is medically and scientifically proven to be the closest that we can give a person with a healthy brain an experience of what dementia might be like. By understanding dementia from the person’s point of view we can change practice, reduce issues and improve their lives.
There were three two and a half hour sessions throughout the day, giving those that attended a variety of the sensory challenges that many with dementia experience on a daily basis.
Our Beechwood Grove Receptionist, Lara took part in one of the sessions and said: “It was enlightening, informative and rather overwhelming! It gave a good insight into how it must be to live with dementia”.
