At Oakland Care, we understand that real care is about more than just meeting medical and physical needs; it’s about creating joy, sparking connections, and nurturing emotional well-being. That’s why animals are such a big part of life in our homes. From the calm presence of a tortoise to the playful energy of baby goats, animal companionship brings something truly special to our residents’ daily lives.
In several of our homes, chickens are part of the family, and they’ve made quite the impression. Residents enjoy feeding them, collecting eggs, and watching their amusing antics in the garden. It’s a lovely, light-hearted routine that encourages time outside and gentle movement. But there’s more to it than that. The chickens often spark memories of childhood, pets, or life in the countryside, bringing stories to the surface and starting conversations that matter. They don’t just make people smile, they can make each day feel a little more meaningful.
Over at Woodland Grove, our residents share their outdoor space with Treasure, a little tortoise who lives in her own custom garden enclosure. She might not say much, but her impact is quietly powerful.  Treasure’s slow and steady nature has a calming effect. Watching her potter about is surprisingly soothing, encouraging mindfulness and offering gentle sensory stimulation. Her name says it all; she really is a treasure to those who care for her. Meanwhile, over at Beechwood Grove, Miles the tortoise has become a firm favourite with residents and staff alike.
One visit we’ll never forget was when two baby goats, Ronnie and Reggie, went to our Woodland Grove care home. They weren’t just a hit in the lounge, they were brought room-to-room, so that even residents unable to leave their beds could meet them.
One emotional moment stood out when Reggie curled up in bed with a resident and fell asleep in his arms. His daughter, who was visiting at the time, said: “Little Reggie curled up in my dad’s arms and went to sleep. Dad loved it.”
Across all our homes, we also regularly welcome therapy animals from friendly dogs and fluffy rabbits to donkeys, miniature horses and even reptiles. These visits don’t just entertain, they lift spirits, ease anxiety, and help residents express themselves in ways that feel natural and joyful.

Whether it’s a planned therapy session or a spontaneous moment in the garden, animals help create a sense of comfort and companionship that words sometimes can’t provide. They remind us all of the power of presence, touch, and gentle connection.
At Oakland Care, living well means living with joy and sometimes, that joy comes with feathers, hooves, fur, or even a very slow-moving shell.
