Today, on World Mental Health Day, we reflect on the importance of mental well-being not just globally, but within our care homes, teams, and communities. This year’s theme, “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” reminds us that the emotional impact of global events can reach us all. At Oakland Care, we believe that mental health support should be accessible, compassionate, and part of everyday life.
Across our homes, wellbeing champions play a vital role in supporting team members and residents alike. Chidozie, a Health Care Assistant and Wellbeing Champion at Woodland Grove, shares a powerful message: “Despite all the challenges around the world that might affect your mental health, we are always available to discuss what matters to you.” His advice is simple but profound. When someone asks, “How are you?” it’s not just a greeting. It’s an invitation to speak openly, to share what’s on your mind, and to know that help is always close by.
We understand that the weight of the world can feel overwhelming, so whether it’s a quiet moment in the garden, a chat over coffee, or a shared laugh during a shift, these small interactions help us stay grounded. Our homes are more than places of care; they’re places of connection, where kindness and empathy are part of our culture.
As we mark World Mental Health Day, we invite everyone—residents, families, team members, and our wider network—to take a breath, check in with yourself, and reach out to someone else. Let’s continue to build a culture where mental health is not just acknowledged, but actively supported.
