Pet therapy at Osbern Manor had a dry and cool feel to it, rather than warm and furry, when residents were treated to a visit from Susie and Simon the boa constrictors.
The residents of the care home were able to touch and stroke the pair, and some even had the animal around their necks or nestled on their chests for cuddles.
“I loved every moment of it! said Linda Meyer, 81. “I’ve never touched a snake before and it was a great experience!”
Susie and Simon are owned by the home’s maintenance manager, Gordon Matchett. He’s originally from South Africa where he and his brother were the go-to if neighbours needed a snake removing from their homes.
“I’ve grown up with snakes and I’ve had them as pets for the last 38 years,” he said. “We like to give our residents here new experiences and thought they’d really enjoy meeting Susie and Simon.
“The snakes have very calm temperaments, so the residents felt confident enough to touch and hold them. Even some of the staff, who were very nervous of them initially, decided to get close and they were very glad they did.”
Gordon supervised the residents and staff for over an hour as they sat with the animals, which are native to South America.
“I thought I would be scared and unsure,” said Winifred Snelling, 87, “but I found it not to be that bad! I liked holding Susan, although she was colder than I expected.”
Lifestyles Team Lead Cheryl Johnson said Gordon’s pets must have met more than 50 people during their visit.
“It’s important for residents to be able to have new opportunities alongside the comfort of the things they already enjoy. They’re going to be talking about this for days to come!”
