Random Acts of Kindness Day at Oakland Care

On 17th February, our care homes marked Random Acts of Kindness Day with meaningful moments, thoughtful surprises, and generous acts that brightened the lives of both our teams and our wider community.

At Hyllden Heights Care Home, the day began with simple kindness, including delicious Belgian iced buns for the team, just because! Just kindness for kindness’ sake, that placed a smile on team member faces –  The Hyllden Heights way.

Meanwhile, at Maplewood Court, our wonderful Lifestyles team, Laura and Jo, set out with one mission: to spread kindness wherever they went. And what unfolded was a day filled with connection, gratitude, and expressed community kindness.

Their journey began at the Heart of Kent Hospice, where they met relatives who were spending tender moments with their loved ones. A surprise bouquet of flowers brought instant smiles and warm conversations that touched all their hearts.

Next on the kindness trail was Base Camp with Sweet Sensations, where the team surprised the hardworking café staff with beautiful flowers — because sometimes the people serving the community deserve a little extra love, too.

The day continued at The Friars, Aylesford, Kent, where more flowers brought more smiles to staff and visitors alike. There was even time for a pit stop at Maidstone Harley-Davidson, where bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk were handed out to staff — a sweet pick-me-up to brighten their afternoon.

But the final stop, Maidstone Town Centre, was where kindness truly came to life.  One lady, who had lost her daughter just three weeks ago, said the flowers were exactly what she needed in that moment. Two lifelong friends, enjoying breakfast and reminiscing well into the afternoon, were thrilled by the unexpected gesture.
Another woman shared that she had recently lost her husband, and the flowers “made her day.”

It reminds us that kindness doesn’t need to be grand or planned. Sometimes it’s as simple as a chat, a smile, a bunch of flowers — a small moment that makes someone feel seen.

Laura commented, “It was a beautiful day, and we loved every moment of spreading love throughout our community.”

Kindness isn’t just something we do — it’s something we cultivate. At Oakland Care, we believe in building a workplace where people feel connected, supported, and appreciated. Inspired by The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, their seven key ingredients help cultivate positive workplace culture including:

  • Setting a Tone
  • Modelling Behaviour
  • Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment
  • Strengths, Mistakes and Growth Mindset
  • Trust, Boundaries and Belonging
  • Communication and Collaboration
  • Celebration

Let’s keep spreading kindness — not just today, but every day.
