Oakland Care’s Spotlight Of The Month – Daisy Slavkova
Working at Oakland Care is like being part of one big family
My name is Daisy and I am the General Manager at Elsyng House Care Home. I joined the care industry after 14 years of a successful career in hospitality. My background is working in management within luxury hotels and I have solid experience in leadership, operations management and project rebranding.
I love my role as a General Manager as it allows me to lead the team to success by setting goals and working towards not only improving the efficiency of the home’s operations but to making a difference in people’s lives. Making a difference in our residents, families and team‘s lives is the most rewarding thing I can think of.
Working at Oakland Care is like being part of one big family. Joining a new industry after 14 years established in my career was a risk. I was anxious to take this step, however, it turned out to be the best decision I have ever made. What made my transition easy was that I have always felt valued and I was listened to. It was very important for me to be part of a company that trusted my expertise and will support my role and ideas.
My journey so far, I started my career in 2020 as Head of Hospitality at Elsyng House and was promoted to General Manager in February 2022. Being promoted I felt all my hard work and effort had been rewarded. It was one of my biggest achievements to become a Registered Manager after only two years of joining the Care industry.
My biggest motivation for me is contributing to Elsyng House and the company’s overall success. I stay motivated by seeing our home performing and our team members developing to their next role. We measure success in many ways, yet for me the recipe is simple – you need to be passionate and give 100% in your role, and everything else will follow.
Also, receiving compliments from our residents, families and team members daily does make me feel I have made a difference.
I feel that my greatest achievement was joining a new industry without any experience and two years later becoming a Registered Manager. I have to admit the healthcare/care industry is old-fashioned and, in many ways, set in its ways. I have at times challenged medical professionals, but that wasn’t always easy as I didn’t have the nurse pin. I still remember one of my first conversations with an assessor when I questioned a prescription change, they replied “I thought you didn’t have any clinical experience”. Two years later the same medical professional commented on my promotion that “it was the best thing that happened to Elsyng House”.
I would recommend Oakland Care as a top employer because the company allows you to do what you do best in a great work environment, the organisation is diverse and inclusive and the company’s values fit my values as an individual – Family, Integrity, Respect and Exceptional.
