This year marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day, and the residents of Oakland Care Homes came together in a series of uplifting and meaningful celebrations across their various locations. Each home embraced the spirit of remembrance and unity, honouring the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom during World War II.

Beechwood Grove initiated the observance with a moving tribute, where residents gathered to place poppies and light a remembrance lamp. Many watched the national service from London, reflecting on the courage of a previous generation. The day closed with a performance by Rosie Ann Page, who serenaded residents with classic tunes from the 1940s, stirring feelings of nostalgia and camaraderie.

At Birchwood Heights, the festivities kicked off early with an entertaining performance from the D-Day Dollies and a delightful Union Jack Berry Sponge created by their excellent catering team. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and joy, setting the tone for the day.

Elsyng House embraced creativity during their arts and crafts session led by the wonderful Maria. Residents crafted beautiful decorations to honour VE Day while sharing stories and laughter, creating a warm community spirit that was felt throughout the home. A special moment was highlighted when Donald, a resident, received a commemorative social coin in recognition of his service—a touching tribute to his contributions and those of many.

Elmbrook Court celebrated with a nostalgic street party, complete with a lunch and a live performance from the D-Day Dollies. The energy was infectious as residents sang along to their favourite classic tunes, evoking memories of a time when joy and resilience were paramount in the face of adversity.

Meanwhile, Hastings Court replicated the iconic street parties from British culture, revelling in the themes of victory, liberation, and peace. They were joined by performer Michelle Cleave, whose remarkable vocals left residents in awe. The day reflected on the significance of unity and goodwill, echoing sentiments expressed by King George VI.

At Hyllden Heights, the celebration began with a lively 1940s-style drum fit session, filled with singing and dancing. The afternoon continued with delicious treats made by their fantastic catering team.

Lambwood Heights took a moment to reflect on the historical significance of VE Day, honouring the courage and sacrifices of the brave souls who fought for peace. Residents also enjoyed an afternoon in the garden filled with wartime tunes and refreshing snacks, creating an atmosphere of remembrance and gratitude.

Maplewood Court hosted a vibrant street party adorned with bunting and music. A delicious strawberry afternoon tea was savoured, thanks to their dedicated chefs. The sense of community shone brightly, as staff, residents, and volunteers all came together to make the day joyful and memorable.

Osbern Manor provided an opportunity for residents to gather over tea and cake, sharing stories and memories that celebrated the peace and freedom achieved after the war. Each moment was cherished, thanks to the efforts of team members and residents who made the occasion meaningful.

Lastly, Woodland Grove attended the VE Day Event in Essex, expressing excitement about bringing even more residents to celebrate together. Their experiences from last year’s event were unforgettable, and this year promises to be even bigger.
