At Oakland Care, sustainability is embedded in our core business strategy, not just as a set of initiatives, but as a guiding principle that shapes how we operate, grow, and give back.

Greener Month, held every September, is our annual celebration of this commitment. It’s a time when every Oakland Care Home activates its sustainability programme through volunteering, education, and community engagement. From eco fairs and guest speakers to hands-on environmental projects, Greener Month showcases the passion and purpose behind our pledge to be The Greener Care Choice.

Green Week 2025: Volunteering with Purpose

From 22nd to 28th September, our care homes will host a series of hands-on community volunteering events. These activities are designed to support local ecosystems, enhance green spaces, and build lasting relationships with the communities around us.

Green Week Volunteering activities include:

  • Beach Clean in Shoeburyness with Woodland Grove and The Marine Conservation Society
  • Wildlife Recovery Mission at Priority House Hospital with Osbern Manor
  • Park Clean-Up at Broomfield Park led by Elsyng House
  • Tree Nursery Support with Essex County Council’s Climate Adaptation Team
  • Multiple “Support a School” projects, where our teams help build outdoor learning spaces and wildlife gardens at nearby schools

Each event is open to our team members, residents, and partners, bringing together people who care about making a difference.

New for 2025: “Support a School” Initiative

This year, we’re launching our ‘Support a School’ initiative, offering up to £1,000 in funding to local schools connected to our care homes. From sensory gardens to creative learning spaces, our DBS-checked Green Team will volunteer their time and skills to help bring these projects to life.

We believe in nurturing the next generation and building meaningful connections with our communities. This initiative is part of our broader “Caring for the Community” programme, which expands our sustainability efforts to include social impact.

Our Sustainability Strategy 2025: Progress and Ambition

Our updated Sustainability Strategy 2025 outlines ambitious goals and real progress:

  1. Carbon Reduction: We’ve already reduced paper consumption by 50% and are on track to cut emissions per employee by 50% by 2030, with a long-term goal of Net Zero by 2050.
  2. Tree Planting: Over 2,000 trees planted to date, with continued support from the Essex Forest Initiative.
  3. Green Energy: New developments are now electric-only, powered by renewable sources.
  4. Scope 3 Emissions: We’re tackling commuting, supplier impact, and waste with new data tracking and green procurement policies.
  5. Herb Gardens & Recycling Stations: Installed across all homes to promote biodiversity and reduce waste.

We remain proudly Carbon Neutral, aligned with both Science-Based Targets and UK Government goals.  Click here to read our Sustainability Strategy 2025 report.
