Nutrition plays a crucial role in the health and wellbeing of people living in care homes. As we age, our bodies require different nutrients to maintain strength, support the immune system, and promote overall quality of life. At Oakland Care, providing well-balanced, enjoyable meals is an essential part of delivering personalised and respectful care.
Older adults often face challenges such as reduced appetite, difficulty swallowing, or dietary restrictions. These factors can increase the risk of malnutrition, which affects recovery, mobility, and mental health. It’s important that care homes adapt menus to meet individual needs, offering meals that are both nutritious and appealing.
Offering residents a variety of meal options ensures they can enjoy food that suits their tastes and dietary requirements. For those needing modified diets, like soft or pureed meals, careful preparation and presentation help maintain dignity and encourage eating as well. Understanding personal preferences and cultural backgrounds also plays a vital role in meal planning.
Mealtimes are more than just about food. They provide opportunities for social connection and enjoyment. Eating together can reduce feelings of loneliness and support emotional wellbeing. Celebrations, themed menus, and communal activities around food help strengthen the sense of community within our care homes.
Staying well hydrated is just as important as eating well. Older adults are especially vulnerable to dehydration, which can lead to confusion and other health problems. Regular encouragement to drink fluids, alongside easy access to water and other suitable drinks, helps keep residents comfortable and healthy.
This focus on hydration has been especially important during the recent summer heatwave. Last week, our Beechwood Grove care home welcomed a visit from Meridian News, who came to see how our residents are keeping cool and comfortable in the warmer weather. From ice-cold drinks and shady garden spots to fun indoor activities, our residents are staying well-hydrated and handling the heat with ease.
The success of nutrition in care homes depends on well-trained staff who understand the importance of nutrition and hydration. Oakland Care is proud to invest in its kitchen teams’ development to ensure residents receive the best possible meals.
Recently, junior chefs from across the group came together at Brakes Innovation Kitchen for a day focused on honing fundamental culinary skills and creativity, led by Development Chef Annika James. During the session, chefs participated in a cook-off to design two-course dishes for the upcoming October menu cycle. The winning dish, Pan-Fried Seabass with Lemon Cream Sauce, was selected by a judging panel for its flavour and presentation.
This initiative exemplifies Oakland Care’s dedication to culinary excellence and personalised nutrition, empowering staff to deliver meals that are both nutritious and appealing.
Good nutrition is more than just providing meals though – it’s about fostering wellbeing, independence, and connection every day. That’s why focusing on nutrition remains a vital part of creating a supportive, thriving community for everyone who calls Oakland Care home.
