International Day of Friendship

International Friendship Day, celebrated on 30th July each year, is a day dedicated to honouring the special bonds that tie us together as humans. It is a perfect time to reflect on the significance of friendships in our lives and the profound impact they have on our well-being, communities, and the world as a whole.

Historical Roots and Global Recognition

The concept of a day dedicated to friendship was first proposed by Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho in 1958 in Paraguay, leading to the establishment of the World Friendship Crusade, an organisation that promotes friendship and fellowship among all human beings, regardless of race, colour, or religion. The United Nations officially recognised July 30th as International Friendship Day in 2011, aiming to foster a culture of peace through understanding and solidarity among individuals and communities.

The Impact of Friendship on Well-being

Numerous studies highlight the positive effects of friendship on mental and physical health. Friends provide emotional support, reduce stress, and increase happiness. They can also encourage healthier lifestyles and provide a buffer against loneliness and isolation. In a world where mental health issues are on the rise, the role of friendship becomes even more crucial. Some amazing friendships and bonds have developed between members of the Oakland Care team and between the team and our residents. A really lovely example of a friendship that has blossomed at our Beechwood Grove care home is between Heidi and a resident called Mary. Heidi’s Dad is the manager of our Beechwood Grove care home, and Heidi often visits the home during the school holidays. Heidi found that she had a lot in common with Mary. Now whenever Heidi is at work with her dad, she makes a beeline for Mary’s room, they share stories, read together and have lots of laughs. When Heidi is unable to get to the home, they often send each other letters and have become Pen pals too! Both Heidi and Mary gain so much from their friendship!

The Essence of Friendship

Friendship transcends boundaries, cultures, and generations. It is a universal language of trust, empathy, and mutual support. Friendships form the bedrock of our social fabric, providing emotional sustenance and a sense of belonging. They enrich our lives with shared experiences. At Oakland Care, we place a lot of emphasis on building friendships whether that is between residents, staff members or other people who visit the homes. A perfect example of this is the inter-generational friendships that we encourage our residents to build. Just a few weeks ago, our Birchwood Heights care home residents enjoyed a Teddy Bear’s Picnic with pupils from a local primary school. The children and residents engaged in an inter-generational reading scheme. This shared experience helped to garner understanding and connection between the generations, which is not only beneficial for our residents, but the children too.

Friendship in the Digital Age

In today’s digital era, friendships often extend beyond physical boundaries. Social media and communication technologies have made it possible to maintain friendships across the globe. While these tools have their challenges, they also provide unique opportunities to connect with people from different cultures and backgrounds, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of our global community.

Celebrating in 2024: Ideas and Inspirations

International Friendship Day 2024 offers numerous ways to celebrate the friends who brighten our lives:

  1. Reconnect and Reaffirm: Use this day to reach out to old friends. A simple phone call, a heartfelt message, or a surprise visit can rekindle connections and reaffirm bonds that may have faded over time.
  2. Create New Memories: Plan a get-together with your friends. Whether it’s a picnic, a dinner party, or even a video call, creating new memories strengthens relationships and brings joy.
  3. Acts of Kindness: Show appreciation for your friends through small acts of kindness. A handwritten note, a thoughtful gift, or simply being there to listen can go a long way in showing how much you value their presence in your life.
  4. Cultural Exchange: Embrace the global aspect of Friendship Day by learning about and celebrating different cultures. Share a meal with friends from diverse backgrounds, exchange stories, or try each other’s traditions and customs.
  5. Support a Cause Together: Engage in a community service project or support a charitable cause with your friends. Working together for a greater good can deepen your bond and make a positive impact on society.
