In a world that often seems divided by age, background, and experience, intergenerational connections are more important than ever. Intergenerational Week is a time to bring people of all ages together to learn, connect, and celebrate the unique contributions of each generation. One of the key goals of Intergenerational Week is to break down barriers between generations and create a sense of understanding and empathy across age groups. By fostering these connections, we can combat ageism and stereotypes, promote intergenerational learning and mentorship, and ultimately build stronger, more inclusive communities.
Each day of Global Intergenerational Week takes on a different theme. 2024’s themes are as follows:
Day 1 (24/04): Let’s Raise Intergenerational Awareness
Day 2 (25/04): Let’s Build Intergenerational Partnerships
Day 3 (26/04): Let’s Combat Loneliness and Social Isolation
Day 4 (27/04): Let’s Celebrate Intergenerational Spaces and Communities
Day 5 (28/04): Let’s Break Down Age Barriers
Day 6 (29/04): EU Day – Solidarity between Generations
Day 7 (30/04): Let’s Build Intergenerational Workplaces
The overall theme emphasises the importance of fostering meaningful relationships between individuals of different ages, backgrounds, and perspectives. By coming together and sharing stories, experiences, and wisdom. This not only helps people to connect with one another on a deeper level but also learn from one another too.
At Oakland Care, we understand the importance of intergenerational activities and connections and we actively encourage these across our care homes.
Our Hastings Court care home welcomed Happy Hands, a weekly playgroup for children under five to their home recently. Our residents and the children had a wonderful afternoon together and the beginnings of new friendships were formed.
Our Birchwood Heights care home celebrated World Book Day, earlier on in the year with a group of children from a local primary school. Sharing stories, reading and generally just having fun was the agenda for the day. Our team members donned costumes on the day too which added to the excitement!
Our Hyllden Heights care home recently had a visit from a group of Year 5 pupils. The children and our residents shared stories, played games and got creative with some arts and crafts too. Seeing the children and the residents having fun together was a fantastic experience and so beneficial too.
Another great example of an intergenerational activity that has blossomed into a firm friendship is when Heidi, whose Dad is the manager of our Beechwood Grove care home, visited the home during the school holidays. She found that she had a lot in common with one resident in particular, Mary. Now whenever Heidi is at work with her dad, she makes a beeline for Mary’s room, they share stories, read together and have lots of laughs. when When Heidi is unable to get to the home, they often send each other letters and have become Penpals too! Both Heidi and Mary gain so much from their friendship!
Intergenerational Week is the perfect time to come together, learn from one another, and celebrate the richness and diversity of shared experiences. Whether you’re a young person looking to connect with older adults for mentorship and guidance, or an older adult hoping to share your wisdom and experiences with the next generation, there is something for everyone to gain from participating in intergenerational activities during this special week.
