Couple reunited to celebrate 72 years of marriage
Couple Fred and Audrey have been able to celebrate 72 years of marriage together thanks to the staff at Elsyng House Care Home.
Elsyng House on Forty Hill reunited Fred and Audrey Bradley just in time for their anniversary after ill health saw them separated for several months. Fred and Audrey, who were married in 1949, enjoyed lunch together and time with their family. Their son, Mike Bradley, said it was a very special day.
“It was lovely to see them together,” he said. “Mum was only 19 when they got married and she’s now 91 so they’ve been together a lifetime. She has dementia and Dad had been caring for her at home but when he became unwell, we had to find the right care for both of them.”
The couple had lived in their home in Edmonton for more than 60 years before ill health saw Fred, 95, go into hospital. Audrey has dementia and needed more care than the family could provide and moved into Elsyng House in March, shortly after it opened.
Elsyng house did not have nursing care in place so, Fred had to move to its sister home, Woodland Grove in Loughton, when he was discharged from hospital. But thanks to care from staff at the home, his health improved so much Fred has now been able to move into Elsyng House to be with his wife.
As the pair marked 72 years of marriage, they held hands and sipped champagne. Fred was very happy to be able to celebrate with his wife.
“I am really grateful for the excellent care and attention given to me first at Woodland Grove, and now to me and my wife at Elsyng House,” he said. “The staff went above and beyond arranging our lovely anniversary dinner and family get together with tea and cake.”
Registered manager, Ruth Christie, said, “We are always thrilled when couples come to us and are able to continue their lives together. They may have different care needs but we can make sure they both get the level of care that’s right for them and still be close to one another. “We wanted to make this a special event for Fred and Audrey, and they loved looking at some of their wedding photos.”
Mike attended along with the couple’s granddaughter, Rachel. “Much as Dad would love to be at home, his and my mum’s health is so much better since moving in,” Mike added. “It’s a lovely environment but most importantly, the staff are fantastic. They genuinely care, they show Mum and Dad a lot of love, giving Dad and us peace of mind.”
