Earth Day 2026 focuses on one of the most urgent challenges of our time — accelerating the transition to renewable energy. The theme “Our Power, Our Planet” highlights the collective responsibility that organisations share in driving meaningful environmental change.
At Oakland Care, this mission closely aligns with our long-standing commitment to sustainability, ESG leadership and responsible care delivery.
This year sees the opening of Harpenden Springs, Oakland Care’s most sustainable Home to date and a landmark moment for the care sector. Designed as a net-zero, gas-free care home, Harpenden Springs is powered entirely by renewable electricity generated onsite.
The 75-bedroom Home features:
• 125 solar panels for onsite energy generation
• Air source heat pumps and underfloor heating
• EV charging points supporting electric transport
• Wildlife gardens enhancing biodiversity
• FSC-certified timber and sustainable materials throughout
• Targeted BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certification, placing it among the top 10% of buildings in the UK
Harpenden Springs is not only Oakland Care’s greenest development yet, but also a blueprint for future Homes.
Alongside new developments, Oakland Care is strengthening sustainability across its existing estate. At Woodland Grove, 170 newly installed solar panels will generate over 65,000 kWh of renewable electricity each year, with the potential to save 17 tonnes of CO₂ annually. Due to the 24/7 nature of care home operations, nearly 100% of this energy can be used onsite, maximising environmental and operational benefits.
Following this installation, similar solar projects have been implemented at Beechwood Grove and Harpenden Springs, with detailed performance analysis informing the next phase of renewable investment.
Oakland Care is proud to have achieved carbon-neutral certification for five consecutive years and to have multiple homes awarded BREEAM Level 3 and ‘Excellent’ ratings. Sustainability is embedded across our design, operations and decision-making — from cleaner energy and biodiversity initiatives to long-term ESG strategy.
Earth Day is a reminder that protecting our planet depends on the choices we make today. By investing in renewable energy, sustainable design and responsible operations, Oakland Care is using its power to build a healthier future for residents, colleagues and generations to come. We believe caring for people also means caring for the planet.
