In our Chef Spotlight series, we showcase the talented and dedicated individuals who make a difference in our care homes. Today, we are excited to introduce you to Daniel Guy, the Head Chef at Maplewood Court.

Daniel has dedicated much of his career to the care sector, working across various companies and sites to develop kitchens that may have been struggling. His journey to becoming a chef is both unique and inspiring. “I more or less fell into becoming a chef after leaving school,” he shares. Daniel started his career laboring on construction sites with his older brother, even taking a stint as a butcher’s apprentice that he didn’t enjoy. It wasn’t until he found a job as a kitchen assistant at a nearby care home that he discovered his true passion. With the support of his employer, he went on to train at Westminster College, paving the way for his culinary career.

After moving away from London, Daniel sought a more local opportunity and found his way to Oakland Care. “After meeting Giles and passing my trade test, I was hooked at what a great company Oakland is,” he recalls. The chance to open his own kitchen from scratch was an opportunity he will never forget.

When asked about his most memorable life experience, Daniel reflects on his journey as a father of five. Yet, he humorously adds, “I’d probably go with getting my dog Benny.” Professionally, he proudly mentions opening the Maplewood Court kitchen and reaching the Team of the Year finals within just six months.

Outside of work, Daniel is an avid dog lover who enjoys long walks with Benny, as well as spending quality time with his children. He also enjoys watching boxing and football—a perfect blend of relaxation and excitement.

On a lighter note, if Daniel were an animal, he would choose to be a lion, symbolising strength and leadership. His favourite colour is orange, and when it comes to biscuits, he has a soft spot for chocolate digestives. As for the classic debate, pineapple on pizza? Daniel firmly stands against it.

In his downtime, he enjoys watching all the Alien films, showing his taste for thrilling narratives.

As Daniel looks towards the future, he expresses his desire to continue nurturing the younger staff at Maplewood Court. “I want to help them become the chefs of the future,” he says, highlighting his passion for mentorship.

We are proud to have dedicated chefs like Daniel Guy leading the catering experiences at our care homes, ensuring that every meal is made with passion and care. Thank you, Daniel, for your hard work and commitment to nurturing future talents in the kitchen!
