Beechwood Grove Resident celebrated her 105th Birthday with a surprise message from Snooker legend
Julie Payne celebrated her very special 105th birthday at Beechwood Grove Care Home with a surprise message from snooker legend, Ronnie O’Sullivan, who put the ‘Rocket’ into celebrations for Julie’s 105th birthday.
Julie only moved into Beechwood Grove care home in Eastbourne four months ago after her failing eyesight made living independently in the town too challenging.
Birthday Surprise
The team planned and treated Julie to a luxury afternoon tea with three friends, including champagne, scones and strawberries.
But it was the message from the six-time world snooker champion that put the biggest smile on her face. “I loved the message from Ronnie, it made my day!” said Julie. “He blew me a kiss and I blew him one back! It was so special.”
Client relationship manager, Sharon Ward, said she was thrilled to be able to organise the special message for Julie. “When people move in with us, we take a lot of time to understand their likes and dislikes so we can tailor their care to them and help them to enjoy the lifestyle they want to live. We knew Julie was a snooker fan and that Ronnie O’Sullivan was her favourite. We contacted his manager to see if we could get a message from him and he was very happy to oblige!”
Eastbourne Life
A lifelong Eastbourne resident, Julie worked for the Post Office at both Upperton Road and on the counter at the Langley branch. She was in her 50s before she learned to drive and only reluctantly gave up her car when she was in her 90s. Never one to be left behind, she decided to buy herself an iPad at the age of 94, the use of which is only restricted by her rapidly deteriorating eyesight.
Staff at the home also treated Julie to decorations, balloons and a visit from the deputy mayor of Eastbourne, Cllr Helen Burton. “I’ve enjoyed every minute,” added Julie. “My heartfelt thanks to everyone here for making it such a super day!”
Beechwood Grove is a purpose-built care home providing residential, nursing, memory and respite care in 60 en-suite rooms.
